Dougga (the modern name for the ancient city of Thugga) is situated in the mountains of Tunisia about 550m above sea level, in an area that was populated by the Numidians. The city served as one of the capitals of Massinissa, Thugga was allied to Rome during the third Punic war so retained much of its independence after Rome's victory and major Romanization of its buildings only occurred around 150AD. A period of prosperity followed, during which much of the city was constructed, along with two aqueduct systems to supply water to the town. The city continued with influence throughout the later empire and into Byzantine times as evidenced by the existance of Christian buildings and Byzantine defensive walls. In the fourth century much of the city was abandoned due to increased taxation and by the invasion of North Africa by the Vandals. since then there has only been a small village on the other side of the hills.
The Capitolium (above and below) was built between 166 and 169 AD and dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva.
The 3,500 seat theatre/odeon has 19 tiers and was built up the hill.
The theatre (below right) dates back to 168 CE and was donated to the city by one of its wealthiest families. It is still used for concerts at the Dougga Festival in summer.
The archaeological site covers an area of approximately 75 ha.
